NIACS Scheme Granted UKAS Accreditation
|
The first and only UKAS accredited mechanism for individual asbestos inspectors has been launched today, in a bid to provide quality assurance to clients, in line with the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002.
The National Individual Asbestos Certification Scheme (NIACS) a joint venture between the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association (ARCA) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is a hugely important breakthrough for individual asbestos inspectors and their clients. Asbestos-related diseases account for over 3,500 deaths each year creating what is the UK’s biggest single cause of work related deaths according to the Health and Safety Executive – making NIACS an important tool in assuring asbestos is inspected correctly by certificated professionals.
CITB-ConstructionSkills Building Engineering Services (BES) has been appointed by NIACS as the certification body for the scheme. CITB-ConstructionSkills will be able to offer the UKAS accredited certification to those individuals who possess the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health (RSPH) Level 3 Certificate in Asbestos Inspection Procedures.

CITB-ConstructionSkills BES, Certification Manager, Steve Smith, said: “We’re pleased to announce today that the first asbestos inspector to successfully achieve a UKAS accredited certificate of competence in asbestos inspection is James Corner of AH Allen Ltd, based in East Yorkshire. Inspectors certification is an independent recognition of their competence, I have the confidence that those inspectors who achieve and maintain their certification will make a valuable contribution in raising the standards of inspection.”
Asbestos Inspectors in possession of the CITB-ConstructionSkills Certificate of Competence (valid for three years) can apply to become members of NIACS and gain entry onto a national register of individually certified Asbestos Inspectors that will be marketed to clients.
